Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center is one of North Fulton County's
treasures! Have you been there? You don't know what you're missing.
Located on 46 acres of ravine forest and historic past, this nature preserve's mile and one-half of walking trails wind past a scenic creek with rocky shoals, spring seeps, picturesque cliffs, mature trees, wildflowers, and native plants; there's also plenty of animal life, old farmstead buildings and related exhibit pieces from the late 1800's. There's so much to see you won't know where to begin.
Owned and operated by the Autrey Family from 1877 to the early 1900's, the mill was located on property west of the center along Sal's Creek. Five stories high, the structure was built for grinding wheat flour; corn was secondary. However by the late 1890's, the flour facilities were discontinued because people could buy flour in the store. By the 1920's, the mill had been abandoned; it was decaying and falling apart.
The property was pretty well abandoned until the 1960's when the deBray family decided to purchase the land. Mr. Fred (a banker) and Mrs. Aida deBray (a music and drama teacher) took on the job of renovating the many structures on the property with the hopes that one day all the family would build on the property. They lived there until Fred's death in the late 1980's. The property was acquired by the Atlanta Fulton County Water Commission in 1988.
There are many ways to experience this unique area landmark. From personal tours to school programs, scouting events, summer camps, and much more, there is something for everyone. Art classes, weddings, celebrations and just a chance to get away from the hustle of everyday life are all available at this wonderful piece of our city's heritage.
