The holiday season can certainly bring out the best in people, and sometimes, in the hustle and bustle of the season, we are less mindful of our safety. We've been indoctrinated about Christmas tree and candle safety, and the Consumer Product Safety Board keeps us apprised of potential toy dangers — but what about personal safety? Unfortunately, the holiday season also can bring out the "Grinches," and with that in mind, we're including several safety tips to keep you, your family, and your belongings safe this holiday season.
Gift Card Grinches
Gift cards are becoming increasingly popular gift choices. Follow these recommended procedures to avoid a Gift Card Grinch:
- l Don't purchase a gift card that looks like it's been tampered with.
- l Whenever possible, request a gift card from behind the counter, rather than one available on a rack to the general public.
- l Be sure to read ALL the fine print on the gift card. Some cards expire and some deduct money for non-usage.
- l If the gift card is for a store that offers online shopping, clarify if the gift card can be used online AND at the physical storefront.
- l When mailing a gift card, do so in a padded envelope.
- l Only purchase the gift card directly from the company issuing it. Never purchase gift cards from online auction sites.
- l For more information on gift card safety and usage, please visit www.ftc.gov.
Personal Safety GrinchesMalls and parking lots are filled with a lot of people and unfortunately, a lot of opportunities for crimes to occur. Stay alert. Trust your instincts.
- For women, rather than carrying a large purse, carry a pouch or a pack attached to your belt. It's less likely to be snatched.
- l Don't overload yourself with packages, making you vulnerable. If need be, take trips to the car to unload, and be sure to put the merchandise in the trunk, out of sight.
- l If you are shopping at night, park as close to the entrance as possible, and only in well-lit areas. Make sure to look around you BEFORE getting out of the car.
- l Walk with confidence and don't appear confused or frightened.
Home GrinchesDon't give criminals the opportunity to "window" shop. Gifts and valuables should be kept out of sight from windows.
After that big screen TV, computer, or other high-ticket item has been opened and removed from the box, shred or tear down the box and put it into plastic bags. Put the bags into your garbage can or take it to a recycling facility that accepts cardboard. Don't leave the box in tact on your curb for the trash service.
Unattended homes are open invitations to criminals. Have a neighbor keep an eye on your house and utilize timers for interior lights. Have that same neighbor pick up your mail and/or newspaper, or stop the deliveries for the duration of your time away.
May your Christmas be merry and safe.
